| Desert Blooms
I first fell in love with these Datura flowers at five in the morning, when I saw them growing beside a dirt road in the high desert of California, near the town of Joshua Tree. What a sight! Large, white trumpet-shaped blossoms on gray-green leaves in the early morning sun created interesting shadows...a perfect picture to paint. I have since revisited these flowers often, to paint them in the light of different times of day. I later found out that the Datura, or Jimson Weed, flower opens after dusk, and closes by mid-morning of the following day. Some of these paintings are of the Datura Moon Flower, which has a purple throat; they truly are a delicious flower to paint, and what a wonderful flower to find in the desert!
