I think poppies, whether they are Iceland poppies, Oriental poppies, or Matillija poppies (sometimes called “fried egg poppies”) are wonderful flowers to paint! Their crinkly petals create interesting patterns of hard lines and shadows, in contrast to the fluffy, soft centers. Because poppies are shaped somewhat like kites, with their large surface area and small stem, I can paint the wind when I paint poppies!
